ServiceNow EmployeeWorks, Employee Slate, AIUX and Lux Explained

Illustration of a puzzled employee surrounded by floating labels reading EmployeeWorks, Employee Slate, AIUX and Lux, with arrows pointing in different directions.

If you run employee experience on ServiceNow, 2026 has given you a lot of new names to keep straight. EmployeeWorks went live in February. Employee Slate launched in May and is now mostly called EmployeeWorks Web App. The AIUX Framework, also written as the AI Experience Framework, is now Lux. Employee Center Pro is still supported, but new features are landing somewhere else.

We hear the same questions from portal owners, HR technology leads and internal communications teams. Which of these do we actually own? Is our Employee Center Pro investment at risk? Do we need to rebuild what we have? What should we tell leadership this quarter?

This guide answers them using ServiceNow’s own documentation, newsroom and staff Community posts, checked as of October 2026: a plain definition of each name, a comparison table, ServiceNow’s stated direction, and a practical plan for adopting the new ServiceNow stack without losing what already works.

Why ServiceNow’s employee experience names feel confusing

The short answer: one product, one experience and one framework all got new names within a few months, and some old names are still in use.

In 2026 ServiceNow launched a new product (EmployeeWorks), a new conversation-first experience inside it (first called Employee Slate) and a new UI framework underneath (first called AIUX, now Lux). Each layer was renamed on its own schedule, while Employee Center and Employee Center Pro keep running alongside them.

What is ServiceNow EmployeeWorks?

ServiceNow EmployeeWorks is ServiceNow’s AI front door for employees: one app where employees ask questions, take action and get work done. As of October 2026, ServiceNow describes it as “the employee front door to work,” available “across web, mobile, Teams, Slack, portals, and kiosks, with support for 100+ languages” (ServiceNow EmployeeWorks product page).

EmployeeWorks became generally available on February 26, 2026, combining Moveworks conversational AI and enterprise search with ServiceNow’s portal and workflows. At Knowledge 2026 on May 5, ServiceNow introduced ServiceNow Otto, which “combines the intelligence of Now Assist, Moveworks, and AI Experience,” and called EmployeeWorks one of the first ways organizations experience Otto.

Today, EmployeeWorks is a package with two parts: Otto as the AI layer, and EmployeeWorks Web App Extended as the web experience (EmployeeWorks Web App Product FAQ, updated October 2026). It is for employees, not customer or external users.

What was Employee Slate, and what is it called now?

Employee Slate was the launch name of the new conversation-first employee portal inside EmployeeWorks. For the Moveworks-powered version, the current name is EmployeeWorks Web App.

ServiceNow introduced Employee Slate on May 5, 2026, and described it as “the next version of Employee Center Pro, built on a new AI-native tech stack,” sold as part of EmployeeWorks and AI-native packages rather than on its own (Getting started with ServiceNow EmployeeWorks, June 15, 2026). The launch post has since been retitled “EmployeeWorks: Introducing EmployeeWorks Web App”, and the documentation landing page now reads “ServiceNow EmployeeWorks Web App (formerly known as Employee Slate)”.

The premium tier, formerly Employee Slate Advanced, is now EmployeeWorks Web App Extended. ServiceNow has not published a rename date.

One detail trips people up: the name is not fully retired. “Employee Slate (built for Now Assist)” serves customers who have Now Assist but not Moveworks, and it had a ServiceNow Store release on October 8, 2026 under that name.

A few facts matter for planning:

  • The home layout was fixed at launch. In the May 2026 release, admins “configure content, not layouts.” Later releases added multi-theme branding and inline editing of headings and banners.

  • It ships monthly and runs off-instance, so it “upgrades automatically.”

  • It is a separate stack from EC Pro. It reuses Employee Center configuration such as taxonomy, profile and org chart, but EC widgets must be rebuilt and there are no migration tools.

What is AIUX, or the AI Experience Framework?

AIUX, also written as the AI Experience Framework, is the earlier name for the AI-native UI technology that Employee Slate was built on. ServiceNow now calls it Lux.

In the May 2026 launch post, ServiceNow described “the AIUX Framework (ServiceNow’s new AI-native tech stack)” as built on Lit.js and Daisy UI, with server-side rendering, running off-instance on Kubernetes managed by ServiceNow. Some names, such as the “AI Experience Framework Components” Store app, still carry it.

ServiceNow hasn’t published one sentence saying “AIUX was renamed Lux,” but three sources show it. The Lux Lab for VS Code release notes say the AI Experience Lab for VS Code “is now named ServiceNow Lux Lab for VS Code” as of the September 2026 release. The Exploring Lux documentation says the aiux prefix in URLs, packages and APIs stays the same. And the EmployeeWorks Web App FAQ now says the Web App is “built on a new platform tech stack, called Lux.”

What is ServiceNow Lux?

Lux is ServiceNow’s platform framework for building AI-native, widget-based UI experiences on a ServiceNow instance. As of October 2026, it powers both the EmployeeWorks Web App and AI Control Tower.

ServiceNow’s documentation describes a framework that “streams the rendered HTML to the browser and hydrates it into a fully interactive single-page app,” using Lit widgets and file-based routing, built by developers with Lux Lab and the ServiceNow SDK. Pages can exchange messages with the ServiceNow Otto chat backend (Lux core concepts).

Key dates and facts, as of October 2026:

  • It installs automatically. The Lux release notes say “No activation is required” on instances running Australia Patch 5 or later, or Zurich Patch 12 or later.

  • General availability. A ServiceNow staff Developer Passport post from September 18, 2026 says Lux goes GA in Q4 2026, with full documentation and PDI availability at that time. ServiceNow has not published a GA date in its documentation or newsroom.

  • Licensing. The same post says the base Lux framework “is a platform feature available to everyone,” while AI features on top of it depend on your SKU.

  • Spelling. ServiceNow writes “Lux” in title case. It has not said that Lux stands for anything.

How do EmployeeWorks, Employee Slate, AIUX and Lux compare?

What has ServiceNow said about its direction?

New employee experience features will come mostly to EmployeeWorks Web App, while Employee Center and Employee Center Pro stay supported. As of October 2026, ServiceNow has said:

  1. New innovation goes to the Web App. “New features and innovations will be predominantly coming on EmployeeWorks Web App,” which “will gradually build parity with Employee Center Pro use cases by 2027” (EmployeeWorks Web App FAQ).

  2. EC and EC Pro are not being deprecated. ServiceNow says there are “no plans to deprecate Employee Center Pro” and that EC and EC Pro “remain as the recommended portals for organizations not currently investing in AI experiences.” Note what the release notes show, though. From June through October 2026, every Employee Center Pro and Employee Center Store release says only “Updated to support the latest version of the dependent apps.” EC Pro’s last listed feature release was in August 2025.

  3. Otto everywhere. ServiceNow says Otto “will be rolled out across all products in the year ahead.”

  4. Lux alongside, not instead of. The staff Developer Passport post says there are no deprecations: “Workspaces and Service Portal keep working, Lux loads alongside them.” Requester experiences on Service Portal are being evaluated for a move to Lux, “but not until early 2027.”

  5. Intranet ambitions. ServiceNow positions the Extended tier for “portal consolidation and full intranet replacement.”

How should customers navigate the change?

Start with what you own and what you’ve built, then phase the move. ServiceNow expects EC Pro and the Web App to coexist until parity, so there’s no need to rush a rip and replace.

  1. Inventory your licenses. EmployeeWorks, an AI package, Now Assist only, or none of these decides whether you’re on the Web App path, the Employee Slate (built for Now Assist) path, or EC and EC Pro for now. Your ServiceNow account team can confirm packaging.

  2. Check your patch level. Lux installs automatically on Australia Patch 5+ or Zurich Patch 12+, and Web App releases have their own platform minimums.

  3. Map your EC Pro customizations. Configuration tables carry over, but widgets don’t.

  4. Keep investing in content. ServiceNow tells EC Pro customers to keep building topic pages, curated content and microsites for now, and says Otto works best on “high-quality and well-maintained” content.

  5. Pilot, then expand. Run the Web App next to your current portal for one audience and widen as features reach parity.

  6. Train builders on Lux. Service Portal developers will need time with Lit widgets, Lux Lab and the ServiceNow SDK.

Where Intellective helps

We’ve been building employee experiences on ServiceNow since 2015. As a ServiceNow Premier partner, we’ve delivered products and custom intranets for global enterprises on Service Portal, Employee Center and Employee Center Pro. That matters now, because one hard part of this transition is brand. Out-of-the-box designs leave customers limited room to bring their corporate identity with them into the new experience. We’ve deployed many custom designs, pixel perfect to corporate brands, so your employee experience still looks and feels like your company on the latest ServiceNow stack.

We help customers sort out what they own, plan the coexistence period, protect their content investment, and adopt EmployeeWorks and Lux in the order that fits their roadmap, moving in the direction ServiceNow has set with less rework.

How Engage fits with EmployeeWorks and Lux

Engage is the only intranet solution built natively on ServiceNow. It’s a ServiceNow-certified app, and it complements EmployeeWorks rather than replacing anything in it. In our positioning, EmployeeWorks and Otto are where employees ask questions and get work done. Engage is where the business owns and publishes content, Spaces and community on the same ServiceNow instance.

Engage works with ServiceNow EmployeeWorks and the new Lux-based experiences (formerly the AI Experience Framework, AIUX), as well as Service Portal, Employee Center and Employee Center Pro. That’s our statement as the vendor, not a ServiceNow claim. It gives business users a drag-and-drop builder, Spaces, a CMS for news and campaigns, social features and in-instance AI. Engage also includes Amaze, our knowledge builder, so the well-maintained content Otto depends on is easier for business teams to create.

FAQ

Is Employee Slate the same as ServiceNow EmployeeWorks?

No. EmployeeWorks is the product, and Employee Slate was the launch name of the web experience inside it. As of October 2026, that experience is called EmployeeWorks Web App for the Moveworks path, while “Employee Slate (built for Now Assist)” is still a current Store app.

Is AIUX the same as Lux?

Essentially, yes. AIUX (the AI Experience Framework) and Lux describe the same new UI stack, and ServiceNow’s documentation now uses the name Lux. A formal naming announcement from ServiceNow is still to come, so expect to see both names for a while.

Is ServiceNow deprecating Employee Center Pro?

No. As of October 2026, ServiceNow says it has “no plans to deprecate Employee Center Pro.” New features will come mostly to EmployeeWorks Web App, which ServiceNow expects to reach parity with EC Pro use cases by 2027.

When is ServiceNow Lux generally available?

A ServiceNow staff Community post from September 2026 says Lux goes GA in Q4 2026. Lux already installs automatically on Australia Patch 5 or later and Zurich Patch 12 or later.

Do I need to rebuild my ServiceNow employee portal for EmployeeWorks?

Partly. EmployeeWorks Web App reuses Employee Center configuration, but EC widgets must be rebuilt and there are no migration tools. ServiceNow expects the two to run side by side until parity.

What does Lux stand for?

ServiceNow hasn’t said. As of October 2026, no official ServiceNow source defines Lux as an acronym, and ServiceNow writes it in title case as “Lux”, not “LUX”.

Is Lux replacing Service Portal?

Not yet. ServiceNow says it has no plans to deprecate Service Portal or Workspaces, and Lux loads alongside them. A ServiceNow staff Community post from September 2026 says requester experiences on Service Portal are being evaluated for a move to Lux, but not until early 2027.

Which ServiceNow releases include Lux?

Lux installs automatically, with no activation needed, on instances running Australia Patch 5 or later or Zurich Patch 12 or later. It also appears in ServiceNow’s Brazil release notes, published in October 2026.

What is ServiceNow Otto?

ServiceNow Otto is the AI layer ServiceNow announced at Knowledge 2026 on May 5, 2026. ServiceNow says it combines Now Assist, Moveworks and AI Experience. It appears first in EmployeeWorks and AI Control Tower, and ServiceNow plans to roll it out across all products in the year ahead.

Do I need Moveworks to use EmployeeWorks Web App?

Yes. ServiceNow’s product FAQ says EmployeeWorks Web App requires a Moveworks configuration. Customers who haven’t licensed Moveworks can deploy a similar experience called Employee Slate (built for Now Assist), which had a ServiceNow Store release on October 8, 2026.

Can Employee Center Pro and EmployeeWorks Web App run at the same time?

Yes. ServiceNow describes them as two isolated experiences on different tech stacks that can run in parallel until the Web App supports the use cases EC Pro covers today. The Web App reuses Employee Center configuration, such as taxonomy, to-dos, profile and org chart.

Should I keep investing in Employee Center Pro content?

ServiceNow’s own FAQ tells EC Pro customers to keep investing in topic pages, curated content and microsites for now. The Web App’s Content Feed widget can show existing EC Pro news and events without a content migration, so that work carries forward.

Can I customize the EmployeeWorks Web App home page?

Only in part. In the May 2026 release the home page layout was fixed, and ServiceNow said admins “configure content, not layouts.” Later releases added multi-theme branding and inline editing of headings and banners. ServiceNow hasn’t said whether the layout itself will become configurable.

Is EmployeeWorks Web App for customers or external users?

No. ServiceNow says EmployeeWorks Web App is built for employees and is not intended for customer service (CSM) or external user use cases.

How do I keep my corporate brand on ServiceNow’s new UI?

Start by deciding which parts of your experience must look and feel like your company, then check them against what the out-of-the-box design lets you change. Intellective has deployed many custom ServiceNow designs, pixel perfect to corporate brands, and helps customers plan how their identity carries onto the latest platform stack.

Does Engage work with ServiceNow EmployeeWorks and Lux?

Engage by Intellective is a ServiceNow-certified Store app that works with ServiceNow EmployeeWorks and the new Lux-based experiences, as well as Service Portal, Employee Center and Employee Center Pro. It adds business-owned content, Spaces, news and a drag-and-drop builder on the same ServiceNow instance.
